White Supremacy and Genitals? Is It Racist?!

A student posted this a couple of days ago as their Gender Watch, and I was stunned!! Not a John Mayer fan as it is, after his awful rendition of Michael Jackson's Human Nature by guitar (what a disgrace), I still couldn't help but look this up for further detail. It's interesting that after accusing his penis of being likened to a "White Supremacist," he still considered Holly Robinson as 'gorgeous,' but she wasn't smitten by his comment one bit. He's sorry of course. You can read more about this here. Folks like Jermaine Dupree and Russell Simmons are pissed too. What do you think? What's to do now? Stop buying his music? Now what's that going to do? Hmmm...if we played devil's advocate for just a moment, couldn't we be safe in saying that we ALL have a preference when it comes to our desires/relationship interests? Why is his view SO offensive? Thanks for bringing this alert. Ps: Hey dude, not every brown/black woman is looking for you to desire her either - ew yuck!

As far as the "N" word goes, I believe that he was definitely wrong and out of line for saying the "N" word. I personally get upset whenever i encounter a white man or woman saying the "N" word, because i feel like it was the white race that used this word to minimize brown/black men and women. And because of this, in a sense it hits a soft spot in almost all black/brown folks. I do also believe that since we all are aware of the negative meaning behind the "N" word, that we all should not say it but I will admit I am a victim of using this language as well. I do try to stray away from saying it but at times it just flows out my mouth.
I am a fan of John Mayer's music and it was disappointing hearing this, but its a tough decision weather or not to still be a fan of just the music. I don't pay for my music (shhh... ) so he wouldn't be making a profit from me hearing his songs but at the same time I would feel a bit like I am betraying myself and personal views. But when I hear a song of his on the radio or on my i pod I do enjoy the song. So do you separate the music from him personally? But his music was created by him and therefore is a part of him. So it is kind of a tricky situation.

I read an excerpt of the interview on mediatakeout.com a couple of days ago. I didn't really see how what he said was racist, but I am biased because I think as he does in a sense. He said his "dick is sort of like a white supremacist", but that he's “going to start dating separately from [his] d**k." He acknowledges the fact that he maybe sexually attracted to only white women, but mentally he is open to other races. I do agree that it is just a matter of preferences, and nothing deeper than that.

I myself have been called "racist" in that I have only dated black men, and always say I am attracted to only them. But what is wrong with that? I like what I like. My body reacts a certain way with black guys that doesn’t happen when I am around another races. I can’t change my natural responses, and won’t apologize for it either. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be able to feel how I feel towards black men towards other races, or that I am attracted to ALL black men. It also doesn’t mean that when other races approach me I automatically shut them down or cut them off. I am open to other races, but black men seem to have my "heart/body/soul".

The fact he says Holly Robinson is "gorgeous" doesn't contradict his "white supremacist” statement. I can say that white guy, for example, is "cute" but I wouldn't want to engage in anything sexual with him. A person may be good-looking, but not attractive/sexually attractive, which I think is what Mayer was saying. He thinks she's pretty but his penis wouldn't be "excited" by her.

If he did anything wrong, it was the mere fact of not being sensitive to race issues. Using the term "white supremacist" as an analogy was highly insensitive and he obviously didn't think before he spoke. But the idea behind his statement is not wrong or racist. While I only am attracted to black guys is not a problem the way I decide to express that may be, which is where Mayer's issue arises.

I think John Mayer was trying to be funny in the worst way possible. This occurs sometimes when your amongst your peers or your close friends....you know the bad joke that you thought was funny but really wasnt. John Mayer is really gonna take a hit to his image for a few years especially with his black/hispanic fans. He just needs to recognize in certain environments you are not supposed to say certain things. Thats like me going to an interview by Ebony Magazine and saying the word b*tch to the interviewer. Language like that is inappropriate and should be known to all regardless of class or race. All John Mayer needs to do for the rest of 2010 is to watch what he says very closely because now everyone has a bulleyes on his back.

When it comes to preference of particular people, yes we do have our own interests and desires but its how we communicate them. John said "white supremacist" which obviously means he desires white women. If he had just said I prefer white women over black/asian/hispanic/etc, he would not be on a hitlist. The way he said it was quite brash and insensitive which leads to his persona. He could be a bad joke teller like i mentioned earlier and didnt know the difference between a good or bad joke in that particular situation. The solution is simple.....his agent should be at his side at all times so his client doesnt say something else that will make him lose more fans which is essentially more money

I mean as I was reading what he said I kept thinking “do his comments really surprise me?” Do his comments really surprise anyone in the society that we live in now? Of course people are going to get angry by what he said and they damn well have every right to get upset. But let’s think for a second…John Mayer talks crap about his White girlfriends so what difference does it make that he should talk about women in other races also. His comments are racist to me to a certain degree but I have hear so much crap and seen so much crap that honestly comments like that don’t phase me.

We ALL have a preference. Don’t try to lie to yourself and say you don’t because you do. I have a preference of men but that doesn’t mean that I’m not open to dating men of different backgrounds. I think this is where John Mayer went wrong. What he said negatively affected a certain race of people. If he doesn’t like Black women so be it but shut your mouth about it, especially if you’re in the public eye. And if he is a racist, so be it but shut your damn mouth!

I think John Mayer is going through emotional issues or a mid-life crisis. He has bad relationships and has portrayed himself, in my opinion, to be the prince of darkness of the pop world. He just needs to shut the f**k up and play his guitar as he well said he should be doing before he becomes one of those celebrities who overdose themselves with prescription drugs!

I am personally not a fan of John Mayer's music except for a couple of songs he has. I never bought his music and I would be fine without it too. It doesn't affect me in any way because I don't follow his music. However, him comparing his d**k to a white supremacist did not seem racist to me except just a preference. I don't consider myself to be racist for being more attractive to latino men and because I feel the same way christine santiago mentioned in her response about her body responding to a certain race more than the other. In my opinion it's not racist but just what your preference is and what your body desires or responds to. I don't think John Mayer should be placed in the racist category but in the The fact the he would be so insensitive and used the "n" in an interview knowing that it would become public is very impolite and inappropriate from his part. I find it very inappropriate even when people that are not celebrities use the ''n'' word in public as part of a conversation. It's very disrespecful and it demonstrates very little awareness they have for society. If a black man/woman uses the "n" word in public, people wouldn't called it racist but if a non black man/woman would say the ''n'' word in public it would be racist, disrespectful and offensive. The ''n'' word shouldn't be used at all if its offensive to a black man/woman and they shouldn't use it either just because they can't be accused of being racist for using it.

When I first read John Meyer’s interview I laughed because he is used to being a jokester but then I felt offended and was a little shock because he pulled the racist card. I think that he was feeling really comfortable during the interview (probably a little high) and he was being very honest with his answers. He definitely prefers white women over black women but his racist words got him in trouble. The reason that he had to apologize is because he had a choice during that interview to be careful with his sentences but he chose to sound very racist. At the end of the day everyone is honest behind the spotlight but if you are a public figure you should think twice before you say anything

John Mayer was trying to be clever with his comment, but he was not successful. I don't think he is racist or inteded his comment to be such; I just think he does not think. The white supremacist comment was very out of line. The Human Nature performance was not that bad. Though I am not a John Mayer fan, he is a great guitarist. I believe John Mayer said that he was going to stop speaking to the media and start thinking before he does speak. I think its important to keep in mind that he is just a celebrity so who cares about what he says.

John Mayer should have really worded his comment differently. Like someone above mentioned, if he would have said that he preferes white women over other races, this would not have been an issue. Using the phrase "white supremicist" definitely adds the racism card to this scenario when in fact it has nothing to do with Mayer being a racist. His comment has to do with his idiocy and lack of social skills. It also has to do with his interests, which we all have. I am actually interested on how this conversation would go if the races were reversed.
When it comes down to it, I will not stop listening to his music because his songs are generic and don't tell me anything about his character. They are entertaining, which is what we turn to music for. People haven't stopped listening to Chris Brown's songs even though he abused (and almost killed) Rihanna. We really cannot boycot Mayor for being more attractive to white women.
