Gender Watch Journal 1
Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 10:02AM What I'm posting is just an example of a Gender Watch entry. As the assignment indicates, you should be much more descriptive than this, and clever of course. In any event... I was watching televsion yesterday, not finding anything particularly interesting on any of the million channels available, except for Erykah Badu's live performance on the Centric station. I came across the video for 50's Have a Baby By Me. The video speaks for itself, but some small details are important: Kelly Rowland's role as the doting/loving mother of triplet BOYS and wife to 50! The lyrics are even more complex and are worth a discussion. Do you think a song like this would entice young women to get pregnant to...in a way "keep their man?" Check out the video here. So... while you think about your own Gender Watch Journal Entries to include here in this first post, I would like you to comment on this video and its lyrics as well. Do you think this video/lyrics and/or depiction of women of color is negative? Tell us why.

I saw this picture on a site I frequently visit known as mediatakeout.com, which is a site, that is a “self-proclaimed” black CNN It hold news that touches upon sports, media, music, and gossip. Although it claims to be the black CNN, one can say their news is either speculation or a play on pictures sent in to them. In my opinion, this site is just for leisure or a good laugh at some of the quite ridiculous things around us in this world today. This leads into the link/picture I have submitted and I have to say why. Why do women have to be in clothing that hardly covers their skin to make money? This woman in this picture is a bit different than the norm by her outrageous attire. She has a butterfly tattoo on her butt and what seem to be butt injections (if you look at the butt to thigh ratio something does not add up). This obviously isn’t appealing to me at all but it probably does appeal to a large mass of men in the world elsewhere. In my opinion there are not enough pictures of people like Michelle Obama or other successful black women to be a proper role model to the next generation. Plus, in my opinion again, women in business attire are more attractive than the women with 85% of their body showing. Your probably asking why or how come you think in such a manner? My father since I was a young boy always told me to go for a girl/woman that not only I am physically attracted to but also mentally attracted to. Women in a more professional attire to me are deemed to be more intellectual and more goal-oriented thus making them more appealing. To wrap up my rant, it is quite simple to fix this dilemma. We need to be focusing or “marketing” the educated woman and not the physically attractive one. This is not an open and shut case however and is not something that can be easily done.
The music video "Baby By Me" depicts women in a negative light because its shows that the only way for a woman to live the lifestyle she wants is to marry a man with money. 50 cent would almost be like a "savior" to her if he had "wifed" her up and taken her out the hood. By having his kids she is guaranteed a lavish lifestyle when they where plenty of other means she could have taken to achieve the finer things in life, like by going to school and making a career for herself.
50 has done it yet again. There are certainly many things that could be said about both the song and the lyrics, but I will comment on the female role. First, I think there is something to be said when the director/producer (male) of the video is skeptical about asking Kelly Rowland to play the female lead because of the questionable image it portrays. However, Kelly Rowland takes the role with no questions or concerns since she wanted to "help out a friend." I suppose a portrayal of females in this way is of no importance to Ms. Rowland. Right.
Now on to the question at hand...does a song like this entice young women to get pregnant in a way to keep their man. My answer is yes, but as always, there are rules. The outcome is only in the female's favor if the baby's daddy is wealthy, like 50Cent. If he isn't...well, what's the point right? The goal is to have a baby by 50, or someone like 50, and become a millionaire. Being a mother and bring a child into the world...ehhh, not so important. This video depicts women as being interested in having a baby (and also being the devoted housewife of course) as the only way a female can be financially successful. Without the wealthy man, who can "get you open" and "make your love come down on them walls", the female will be left like Ms. Rowland at the end of the video, pushing a stroller on the street instead of getting picked up in a nice luxury car. The world with someone like 50 is perfect, a happy family, exactly what females should strive for. Otherwise, you will end up walking. Thanks 50...I'll be sure to remember you when thinking about marriage and children. NOT!
Does this song entice women to have babies? Absolutely!!! The first thing we have to think about is who is listening to this music. To be very honest the first people that come to mind are teenagers. For the most part teenagers think that they know everything and that they are invincible. We have all been there and done that. These are people who are very easily influenced my media. Young woman who are influenced by such things definitely have a greater chance of having children to “keep their man.”
I am a true believer of doing what you have to do to be successful. It is a little upsetting for 50 and Kelly Rowland to put together such “crap” (for lack of a better word) without thinking the effect that it could have on young adults and even their fans. I understand how many people just believe that it’s JUST music. But let’s think about it a little, and open our eyes ladies and gentlemen!! This music is influencing a big problem young, urban woman of color are facing.
Sex, sex, and sex the sexual explicit publication of women of color in mainstream black magazines paraded in news stand across the city of New York. Smooth is just one of the many African American magazines that are paraded on every news stand of half naked women of color that I see every evening after work or school as I’m drawn to the news stand in the subway on 23 rd street and Park ave (downtown) for a snack before I head home. Once you have entered the turnstile and turn left the first thing you see are magazine of naked women of color the entire right hand side of the stand is wallpapered with naked women the only thing they are wearing is a bra and a thong. The news stand he that is runs by Mahama whom I asked why he sells this kind of magazine he stated that “they are his best sellers because beside the gossip magazine the magazines with the big ass are what men ask for, sex sells”.
Smooth Magazine is just one of the many narrow-sighted of black magazine that define the black female by her sexuality who is depicted as naked and exotic. Smooth magazine claim to spice up news and entertainment with nudity. The Black community and Black women especially should start questioning what kind of a society we are establishing for the young black females of tomorrow. How are we to correct the damage that the Black publications that berate black women by casting derogatory images of black females?
We as women should reclaim our womanhood by liberating our sisters and remind one another the effects on the black female sense of self; also to show the next generation of young black females to see them self as a person. However there are other black magazine that are not promoted as much on news stand around the city that provide positive views of [black] womanhood, such as Ebony and JET magazine that should be promoted.
I am reading this article and my blood is boiling. I am Asian thus my opinion should be considered as totally neutral as I’m neither black nor white. This first article that I’m quoting is regarding a young black girl who was tricked and made a captive where she was raped, physically and mentally tortured by 6 white males and females. Now that she has fortunately been able to escape, her lawyers are concerned over what term of the law they want to use on the attackers to get her the kind of justice she deserves.
(http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/23/national/main3400474.shtml) this incident occurred in October 2007 in West Virginia. On the other hand I was reading this article by Lawrence Auster which begins as follows, “The Truth of Interracial Rape in the United States
37,460 rapes of White Women by black men in 2005 — Black women raped by White men — 0 !( http://www.davidduke.com/general/the-truth-of-interracial-rape-in-the-united-states_2111.html)
In this article the writer is actually retaliating the media for calling the white rapists as White rapists. And then he further goes on to say, “The media went crazy over the clearly untrue allegation that some White Duke University students raped a Black drug addict and stripper
Only because the victim is a black girl, she is a drug addict and a stripper. My point is that when I go to a strip club. I see 15 white strippers and only 1 black stripper. Why is this girl being highlighted as a stripper and why is her drug addiction which I highly doubt an issue here. She has been raped that’s it now give her justice.
But no. they want to discriminate and so they will. Figures of these 2 black girls are not counted as rapes and still the zero doesn’t move up to the REAL amount. But the white women rush to thousands and white rapists still act victims for being titled White with their crime. Probably black women need to get discriminated and still be sorry for it just to satisfy these one sided stories and whites.
My solution or opinion here is very simple yet requires a neutral approach. First of all, this website www.davidduke.com be approached and questions as to why they are counting black female rape from the hands of white males as zero. Then they need to be asked why they are highlighting this issue of white rapists as being highlighted as white. Have they ever reported for a black girl and if they did then did they scream for calling her a Black girl. And in the West Virginia rape and torture incident, the victims should not only be punished but some law be made more severe to punish criminals caught in hate crimes. Because her lawyers don’t want to file a hate crime report as it would only cost the attackers 10 years in prison. This punishment is very less. If the KKK was once left unharmed for killing black women then now then black women should also be backed up with serious protection. Assaulting a bus operator is 7 years in prison and here is this girl raped and tortured, it has to be more than 10 years for God’s sake! Increase the penalty and give black women more protection.
50 Cent's "Baby By Me" lyrics imply that if women were to marry him they would become filthy rich. This suggests that women can't get rich on their own; they would have to marry a wealthy man to live a lavish lifestyle, when in fact women can achieve success without men. In addition, most of the the topics he talks about are sexual. Sex and money seem to be the only two things that 50 offers the woman who he is singing to in the song. Is that all and what women need, sex and money to be enticed into a relationship? No, but that's the impression 50 makes.
On another note, I have overheard a conversation between two male students at Baruch that offended me. It took place on the first floor of the vertical campus. One guy was talking about a girl he recently got with and the term "did you hit that bitch" came up from the other guy. This truly offends me because first of all, women should not be called bitches. The term is demeaning and mischaracterizes women. Furthermore, I don't get why some guys have to speak disrespectfully about girls' bodies. To hear someone talk about a girl like a sexual object is offensive. Maybe if the guys who say disrespectful comments and use demeaning terms to describe females can stop if they are told by guys who they have respect for that it's absolutely wrong.
Today after I got off the 6 train and walked up the stair to head to class I decided to take the Metro to see what is happening in the world today. Since I don’t read much I just looked through the newspaper to see if there was any eye catching stories that I would be interested in reading. I saw this title “Women ‘slower to get a joke’”, which of course caught my attention. Basically this article of just a few sentences still makes me wonder if people really feel this way. Although the article says that there has been researches done to prove this point but somehow I feel offended as a women. I think that I get joke just as easily as men do, I don’t understand why there needs to be a study done to show that supposedly women are slower in the comprehension process but more emotional because “they get more out of it than a man would.” I think people need to stop trying to connect different reactions and emotions to being feminine or masculine.
I was on a popular website that a lot of black and white but predominantly black people go on (http://tinyurl.com/yfltcel) and I saw a video…but the thing is the main freeze frame in the video was a woman basically naked in a g-string, so I figured let me click on this and see what’s going on and the first thing I notice besides the practically naked girl dancing is Lil Wayne and Juelz Santana’s song home run playing and in the first few lines you already hear the word B**ch being used a lot and this woman is pouring oil on herself and rubbing it all over herself and her buttocks. Im not saying that a woman shouldn’t try to be sexy but there are just some things that should be left behind closed doors. The reason why I am bringing this up is that I feel that this is one of the reasons males look down on woman and treat them the way they do…I feel if a woman or even a male can not respect them selves how can they expect some one else to take them seriously…but I think this is all because of the way the entertainment industry is set up in today’s time…Women are being told if they don’t have the body, face, and sex appeal they cant be successful but they are wrong…I believe a woman can be sexy and still show that she has common brains and show that she can be successful in a positive way…but the music some artist make seems like they are promoting the idea that a woman can only be acknowledged if she is only in videos or if she “smashes the homies” when in reality they laugh at the woman who think they are getting respect by degrading themselves…I think every one should be able to respect themselves and look in there reflection and not be ashamed
In this video Baby by Me, Kelly Rowland plays the potential love interest of Fifty. Now his chorus have a baby by me; baby be a millionaire would suggest and in a way promote women to get pregnant. The catch however is for these same women to get pregnant by a man that can cover "the life" of fancy cars and clothes that she desires. This is not for the woman to just have a baby by just anybody because it is not. The song promotes women chasing after the high rollers in money to in a way lock them up or like the professor says "keep their man". Another interesting fact is that Kelly's character in this video was depicted as the loving house wife. This is not necessarily bad but she isnt shown building her own brand/self up. Her fortunes is dependent on Fifty's success. If by any chance Fifty's career turns to ashes overnight, her lovely life in the nice houses and elegant restaurants is over. She is delievering a service (sex and childbearing) to access his riches which is quite apparent in Fif’s bars describing the sexcapades (sex + escapades) between the two individuals. The final point that should be made is that for a song that says have a Baby By Me there is not that many shots of the baby or kids in it. Is it really about have a child by someone or is it really about using this child to gain access to the money of the man who is Fifty in this instance. This is sadly a misrepresentation of women and how they should carry themselves in their life in the wrong ways.
In a song like this, could only be enticing to idiotic girls who believe you can hold a man down with a child. A child in a man’s life can affect a man in numerous ways, he could be there for his child, a child might scare him off because of responsibilities or temporarily have him at a woman’s side and many other possibilities. 50 cent depicts the clean cut version by actually transforming this average girl into this amazing wife and mother of triplets. Having him walk into her life is like a blessing in disguise. The 1950s style to the homemaker makes this song even more appealing because he is making all the money and you just stay home and tend to everything that pertains to the house and look flawless while you manage a million in one things. What it does not depict is the reality that not all men marry their child’s mother and live a picture perfect life. The only people who are actually living a good life are baby mothers of the rich and famous. An example is Lil Wayne with four different baby mothers; I cannot fathom the thought that any woman can even give him a second look but rather go to the highest level and give birth to his children. I should not be disappointed in him but rather the women that are fully aware of the other baby mothers’ and still open their legs and give birth to his kids. Between him and 50 cent they are glorifying getting women pregnant because once they do get them pregnant they spread their seed making them look manly that they can impregnate as many women as they want because they have financial ability to do so. In addition, these women are set for life just for having the child of a millionaire. Now for the reality to set in not every man has money to splurge and have his wife or baby mother at home with nice clothing, looking flawless and have your kids in matching outfits. That is not how things work if girls looking at this video find it enticing then they have lost their minds and need to put their feet on the ground. The way this video portrays women of color negatively is in the end when the man comes up to Kelly Rowland with the baby girl in his arms and the stroller, not every women of color has a child when they are young. The video is just a stereotype of women of color getting pregnant at a young age. In today’s society the word baby mama is becoming more and more common, this video coming out and encouraging pregnancy so females can become instant millionaires is just sending out the wrong message.

Majority of the music that the artist Plies creates depicts women in a negative light in some form or another, but one of his songs that really caught my interest the most was the song “Bust It Baby”. The lyrics in this song degrade women by making up a whole new category for a woman other than being a wife or girlfriend, she’s now a “bust it baby” (whatever that is suppose to be). In my opinion after listening to the song my definition of a “bust it baby” would be just a girl on the side who would be lower than a girlfriend because he is a man who is always on the road and does not have the time for the responsibilities that come with being in a relationship. The woman who he is referring to would be just a female that he sees only when he is in town. She is suppose to be satisfied with her title as being a “bust it baby” because everyone in the “hood” knows her as being his girl. The lyrics in this song dumb down the intelligence of women making it seem like they aren’t worth being the only woman in a man’s life even though he lives this lifestyle and that they should be proud in a sense to be a “bust it baby” which is really not a good title to have.
This weekend in the middle of my morning music videos on VH1, I decided to see if MTV had decided to show music videos again and to my surprise they actually did. After a couple of random Taylor Swift and Jay Z videos, an Akon video came on called "Sexy Chick". I personally can't stand Akon so I almost changed to channel until I heard the chorus where he began to describe this girl he had just met, and although I had heard the song various times on the radio I don't think I ever listened to what he was saying. He started out by complimenting her on her booty shaking capabilities and how "banging" her body is and then says "I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful" and then about 30 seconds of a chorus saying "damn yous a sexy chick" (the unedited version being "damn yous a sexy bitch"). I thought it was a little strange that this entire song is supposed to be about describing this women without saying anything disrespectful or demeaning about her yet all he's talking about is her butt her body and calling her a sexy bitch as if that isn't at all disrespectful. To me it doesn't matter how much women are trying to turn bitch into a positive thing and take all the negative power out of the word, when someone calls you that in the wrong context you probably want to punch them in the face. And I'm pretty sure if someone called Akon's sister a sexy bitch he'd punch that guy in the face too, but because it's just some random woman that makes it okay.
I'm not trying to say that I expect most rap songs to talk about how they met this girl and talk about how smart she was and what an excelent conversationalist she is, but is it possible for you to maybe find a way to compliment a woman without talking about how great her ass is and what a "sexy bitch" she is?
I watched the video and thought the message was "don't settle for less" and that there's a better option out there. I don't see women being depicted as dependent creatures who can't make their own money. Instead I see a man who desires a woman who he can't be with because she's with another man - sort of like an unrequited love. The lyrics on the other hand was a little too sexual, but there were sweet parts like, "I'll make you smile on the regular" and "I need you to be what I need, more than liquor and weed. I need you to maybe give me a seed, I need you to give me reason to breathe." Let's face it, if a man can make me smile on the regular AND make me a millionaire at the same time, why wouldn't I want to have his babies?
Baby by Me by 50 Cent
Whenever I watch this video, I do not see anything wrong with it. He is just telling the girl if you are with him, you will have it all. He will provide the cars, the clothing, money, and the loving that he provides. The video shows nothing wrong, it isn't depicted a female in a very badlight, (there aren't "video models" in it, simply focusing it on one woman.) 50 Cent shows a lot of love and affection towards his "wife", he provides everything for her and their children, he also acknowledges her as his woman/partner in public. The lyrics are completely different if you pay attention and read them; it states what he will do and want during love making sessions with his woman. I don't find the lyrics depicted in a negative light, I find them poetic. As I have read the above comments, I haven't find anything positive, like come on guys, it isn't fully negative.
As far as the question, will this incite young women to get pregnant by his lyrics..... maybe because some females don't think about their foolish actions, but that is a dumb move. There are a lot of females that have babies for the wrong reasons, thinking it will trap men.... IT WOULD NOT... if you guys didn't have a healthy relationship then what makes you think a baby will solve your problems, it wont! A baby isn't a toy, you can tag it along or throw it anywhere, it is an investment and a creation brought to Earth. There are evil women out there who thinks child support or milking the "baby father" is revenge or getting pregnant by a wealthy man is their ticket to wealth... it's sad that females think like this. When you clearly can make your own money with the education that you have received.
It was a pretty mild winter Wednesday evening as I was running late to my basketball game with my job’s team. Surrounded by nothing but masculine figures surrounding me in an Elementary public school in the lower east side. I was definitely the only female in the whole entire gym. Yellow tinted florescent lights, wood backboards, and wood floors with the base lines that were about a foot and a half away from the wall, everything seemed like a typical game. As the game progressed I was about to sub myself in for one of the colleagues/teammates that seemed tired. As I subbed myself in and played for what seemed like for maybe a few minutes, the other co-captain decided to take me out and put the very person I took out. I looked at him and he deeply expressed that he didn’t want me to get hurt and that since I am a girl I wouldn’t be able to handle the physical aspect of the sport. Last time I checked, I remembered that basketball was a physical contact sport. Even though it was maybe a remark that maybe I should not of not been offended
I felt as though he was trying to say that females couldn’t “hang” with the guys because we are seen as little delicate objects. It’s understandable that the body structure of a female is quite different from a male’s body but I believe that both sides and sexes have their weak spots. I felt that they were using my gender as an excuse to not play me in the game. I could be just as good and aggressive as anyone on the court. Even though I am the smallest player on the court, it wasn’t something that preventing me from performing well and having the same impact as anyone else on the team. I can’t say that everyone will be offended by this situation, considering that if the gender roles were switched and a male were to play for a female’s team and league, they would be utilized as much as possible because they are perceived as a dominate character on the court. Even though my colleague was being genuine and care about my safety, I believe that I am capable of recognizing what to do and what not to do on the court or what is considered dangerous for me.
I simply could speak to my teammates and colleague about the situation would be ideal, it doesn’t solve anything. At the moment, the only way I can prove that I deserve as much time as anyone else on the team is by playing my heart out and show them that I know what I am doing on the court. If females really start playing with males in their league to show everyone that females are just as good as males in a male dominate sport.
In regards to the video I do find it quite negative toward women. I never understood why a female would have to wear lace lingerie to bed and have that perceived as “sexy” or even appealing for that matter. In terms of the lyrics, the whole song is revolved around sex, babies, and how females tend to allow themselves to be put in a situation of raising the family. I know it’s something that females are just “known” for, taking care of all the kids in the house behind a white picket fence and so forth. But why can’t a woman bring in the money? Why couldn’t we have our own baby and also be the very reason why we are millionaires?
No matter what people say, they way teenagers talk is the same way 50 cents is singing in his new song. 50 cent should be a role model and think about the songs he makes because his main audience is teenagers. The way 50 cent is talking to the girl is making her look like all she wants is sex. He has all these ideas of what he's going to do to her in bed. Sometimes guys tell girls all these stuff thinking they would want to do it but instead the girl does it not to lose her man. Girls probably think that if she doesn't do all those things that he's going to find another girl to do it with. This video make it look like girls should just be pleased sexually and teenage girls start believing that and start having sex in order to keep their boyfriends.
I will never forget the morning bus ride where I literally witnessed a man abusing his significant other—over the phone. Many people only include physical abuse when they hear the phrase “domestic abuse.” However, what needs to be realized that there are other kinds of abuse that can take place, such as verbal and mental abuse.
It was an average weekday morning. I woke up, got ready for school, and rushed out of my house to catch the express bus down the block. When I got on the bus, I scanned over the seats to see if there were any vacancies left, but the bus was slightly crowded that morning. I shuffled my way farther and farther towards the back of the bus, all while mentally ruling out whom I would not sit next to. Eventually I ended up in the last row of seats, in the center seat of five. An annoyed-looking man was sitting in the seat diagonally in front of me to the right, huffing and puffing while clutching his cell phone so tightly that his fingers were turning red.
After a couple of minutes, his cell phone rang.
“YEAH, WHAT?”
I could hear a woman on the other end, her voice changing in pitch as she talked, fluctuating between loud screeching to softer speech. The irritated man interrupted,
“What took you so long to call me back?! I’ve been calling for ten fu*king minutes and you didn’t even pick up. It’s not like you even do anything, so I doubt you were busy cleaning the house.”
My eyes scanned to the other people seated around me, as if to say, “Are you all hearing this?” One of the women seated near the man looked very pensive while listening, staring at a spot on the floor and not blinking. She looked as if she wanted to hear every word, and moving an inch or blinking would somehow prevent her from hearing the whole conversation.
From what I could tell, the man was yelling at who I assume to be his wife or girlfriend about very trivial things, such as her not making his doctor appointments for him, not doing chores, you know, the things women are “supposed” to be doing. He suddenly went from ranting at a loud volume to practically roaring at her over the phone, which caused some people on the bus to turn around and stare.
“I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS BULLSH*T YOU PUT ME THROUGH. I’m on a bus early every day going to work to make money for your fat, lazy ass, and you can’t even do ONE SIMPLE THING for me. You’re so fu*king useless, you know that?!”
I suddenly had the same facial expression of the woman seated near me—I was staring directly at my left shoe and not blinking, hanging onto every word this man was screaming at the top of his lungs.
“Are you serious right now? STOP CRYING, SERIOUSLY, JUST STOP. You cry over EVERY LITTLE THING and it makes me sick. I’m just gonna hang up if you keep acting like such a baby.”
More people were getting on the bus. Much like me, some picky seat-searchers were dragging their feet to the back of the bus to where this angry man was screaming into a cell phone. The people looking for seats in the back held only an expression of, “I don’t want to get involved,” and sat down wherever they could. The man eventually hung up on his significant other, and he didn’t speak for the remainder of the ride to Manhattan.
I was completely appalled at the man’s behavior, but what felt worse was trying to think about that woman’s life at home. I can only imagine what that guy is like after coming home from work—probably expecting to see her vacuuming the floor while wearing a baby-pink apron and only stopping her cleaning to greet him and lead him to a perfectly-set kitchen table where his warm dinner is waiting for him. Then reality sets in; this woman probably can’t stand the sight of him, so I doubt she’s going to go out of her way to do anything nice for him after receiving that kind of treatment each day.
The way this man behaved on the bus (and the silence of everyone who witnessed it—including myself) was disgusting, and I will be the first to admit that I should have said something. But then I think about the things I’ve learned form life, such as “Mind your own business.” However, in a way, this WAS my business.
There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of other men in New York City just like this guy. How do I know I’m not going to end up with someone just like that? My pride barks back, “Puh-leeze, you’ll be long-gone before any man treats you that way!” but how would I know for sure? I’m sure when that woman got together with that man, she saw his qualities as admirable. Back then, his “ability to take charge” made her feel protected, but his once admirable quality is now whittled down to what it really is—a need to feel powerful and in control.
By no means am I a psychology major, so my aforementioned statements may sound very assumed, but my best friend was once in an abusive relationship. I know the warning signs and I’ve seen the behavior before. The most unbelievable aspect of it all is that the one thing the abused person fears the most is losing their significant other, even though they’re being treated like expendable people.
In terms of answering the question, “What can we do?” I can only suggest that the person being abused needs a good support system behind her to help her remember her worth and to get out of the relationship as soon as possible. When my best friend was going through all of this, I had to constantly remind her of what a great person she was and how she didn’t deserve the treatment she was getting, because after all the mental abuse she had gotten from her boyfriend at the time, her self-esteem was at an all-time low. I can only hope that other women have a support system like this to help them get out of the situation.
As for the 50 Cent music video “Baby By Me,” I completely agree with many of the comments here that say how the only message from the video is all 50 Cent has to offer is money and sex, and that ostensibly is all that is needed to sustain a relationship with a woman these days. The woman is basically just seen as a workhorse who is required to have children in exchange for the money and lifestyle she would get with 50 Cent, and that is completely offensive. However, like a lot of hip-hop, this kind of message is just taken in stride while the teenagers bump to the beat and the parents claim they don’t understand the lyrics.
Not only does music give a bad name for women so does fashion. Now I am all for Fashion and it’s unique was of expressing among people, but lately it has been getting out of hand with it portrayal of women., Recently I saw a dolce and Gabbana ad on TV. called D&G time.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr_G2DOD5zk) The ad was supposed to be introducing it’s new line of watches. The ad opens up with a young many and women kissing on each other passionately for a few minuets( again what does this have to do with time) and then she glances over and spots another man in which they engage in a three some ass both men are kissing and fondling around with her. Now I don’t know if they are trying to say that time is too short so screw around with more then one person at once, but it actually is degrading for the young lady in the commercial. Clothing comes off , and more kissing is going on while all three characters have on these watches and through passionate touches and kisses you catch a glimpse of the items being advertised. Eventually a maid comes in at witnesses the event and scream, then a hand processed to cover her mouth and with a watch around its wrist and a text read across “D&G time.”
Has fashion lost its morals? Have they no respect for the portrayal of women let alone humanity? Well this television commercial shows how women are being degraded in the fashion as well as media. Showing a woman entangled in a three some with two men only shows that she is weak and submissive. I think that it is “time” to change this outlook on women.
Yes I do think this song would strongly influence young women to get pregnant. It would be like a security for them to have power over their man. 50 cent is also saying if you have a baby with him you are going to be a millionaire. I don’t necessarily believe that this video only depicts women of color negatively, but any woman that willing to put themselves in this particular situation. It makes it seem like women are only good for making babies and caring for her husband (or man) while there husband is out at work.
But like other people mentioned above was that 50 cent speaks to an audience of teenagers that are so nieve and unware of the real world and real world situations. Many teenagers think they are invisible to getting pregnant without it actually happening to them or someone they know.
For my first gender watch journal I choose to do a song by 50 cent and Justin Timberlake that I found to target women of color, but not only that but sexy women which they portray as strippers, married women, housewives, ect. 50 Cent - Ayo Technology ft. Justin Timberlake was the song I picked and while watching the video it seemed as if 50 cent and Justin Timberlake could get any girl they desired and do what they wanted to them to please them. It reminded me of a stripper or escort situation. All of the girls in the video are dressed up very suductively and their faces are all masked. They are dancing in a nice hotel or conference room for all of these men that appear to be business like. Then later on in the video you see them serving drinks to the men. Its almost like these women are only there to please them, and do like maid work for them. I find this to be a little disturbing because that isn't the role of all women, and the way they go about portraying these women its almost like they are toys for the men to play with, and when they are done they go and get new ones. This isn't the way women, and specifically in this video young women should be portrayed. It almost seems like the women in the video are under the influence of something and doing what the men want to see.
